“heart-in-the-mouth theatre, unbearably poignant, unrepeatable”
London Evening Standard

“In an age when fakery is much derided – particularly amongst politicians in this place – the arts help us to understand concepts like authenticity.
I have been to two Shakespeare plays in the last fortnight. One was Hamlet, performed by the Factory. This is a group of young actors and actresses who perform Hamlet in different venues every Sunday.
They have no costumes, no set and ask the audience to bring along props. At the start they draw lots as to who will perform the different roles. It works brilliantly and is somehow totally authentic. On Sunday I went to see Lear at the Globe – a very different but no less valid type of authenticity.”

“Factory’s Hamlet exists in the dimension where real life meets the stage, makes you see the dramatic in the everyday, the everyday in the dramatic.”

“The Factory is the only theatre company I know offering their audience a truly unique and original live event of creation rather than repetition at every show.
Inspired by the audience-actor relationship revived in the architecture of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the artists of the Factory are truly dismantling the fourth wall of modern theatre. I have witnessed pure magic in their play and shared directly with their actors an experience I normally only find in a wonderful rehearsal room; the experience of spontaneous discovery and original creation.
They remind me of the way Miles Davis would treat his concerts as open rehearsals, or Bob Dylan never plans exactly which songs he wants to sing. They have realised that live creation and raw presence in a space is ultimately more valid and real than pre-cooked ready-meal interpretation.
This work is radical and very counter to the culture of presentation, clever concept, and slick audience manipulation. You will feel yourself on the pitch, beside the net, under the hoop, in the goal, on the green, playing along, rather than looking at the screen from the back of the stadium.
They are a young company who have started with nothing but a crazy idea and built everything themselves. They have developed a craft and skill that no other company have; the skill of playing together live.
If other companies serve a nice dish of battered fish and chips, The Factory serves sushi; raw, fresh, delicious.”
